Ordering steel plate sounds simple until the wrong order shows up on site. Wrong thickness, wrong grade, or a three-day wait on a quote can throw off your whole schedule. We’ve filled plate orders for contractors all over Southern California, and the same five mistakes keep costing them time and money. Fix these before your next order.
Mistake 1: Guessing on Steel Plate Thickness
Many contractors order steel plate by eye instead of checking the project specifications. Both plate thickness and steel grade should be confirmed before ordering, because the required thickness does not automatically determine whether A36 or A572 Grade 50 is appropriate.
A quarter-inch off doesn’t sound like much, but on a base plate or a track-out mat, it can mean a failed inspection or a plate that won’t sit flush. Before you order, review the latest project drawings and confirm the thickness called out. If you’re not sure what you need, give us your dimensions and we’ll cut it to spec.
Mistake 2: Not Checking A36 vs A572 Grade 50
Why Steel Plate Grade Matters
Steel plate grade matters as much as thickness. ASTM A36 and ASTM A572 Grade 50 are both commonly used steel grades, but they are not the same.
A36 is a hot-rolled carbon structural steel commonly used for general fabrication, base plates, trench plates, and miscellaneous steel work. A572 Grade 50 is a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel with a higher minimum yield strength.
| Property | ASTM A36 | ASTM A572 Grade 50 |
| Steel type | Carbon structural steel | High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel |
| Minimum yield strength* | 36 ksi | 50 ksi |
| Common advantage | Availability and versatility | Higher minimum yield strength |
| Weldability | Generally excellent | Generally excellent |
| Typical uses | Base plates, trench plates, general fabrication, structural work | Structural plate, heavy construction, higher-strength applications |
*Yield strength can depend on product form and thickness. Always verify the applicable ASTM specification and project requirements.
When A36 Makes Sense
A36 is commonly selected for general fabrication and structural applications where the project does not require the higher minimum yield strength of Grade 50. It is widely recognized, readily available, and commonly specified for steel plates and miscellaneous steel work.
When A572 Grade 50 Makes Sense
A572 Grade 50 is often specified when a project requires higher strength. Its 50 ksi minimum yield strength can provide additional structural capacity, but the engineer’s drawings and project specifications should determine whether Grade 50 is required.
Can A572 Grade 50 Replace A36?
Do not assume that A572 Grade 50 and A36 are automatically interchangeable. Even though A572 Grade 50 has a higher minimum yield strength, any substitution should be reviewed against the project specifications, design requirements, chemistry, fabrication requirements, and applicable engineering requirements.
Buyer takeaway: A572 Grade 50 is not simply a “better A36.” The appropriate steel grade depends on the required specification, strength, fabrication requirements, availability, and cost. When a specific grade is required, request and retain the Material Test Report (MTR) for the material.
Mistake 3: Skipping the Custom Cut Option
Some contractors order the closest available size instead of the size they actually need, then burn labor time cutting it down on site. That’s wasted steel and wasted hours. Give us your plate dimensions and we can cut it to your specified dimensions โ you can browse plate thickness options and place the order online in a few minutes.
Mistake 4: Waiting Days on a Quote
Waiting two or three days for a quote can delay an active project on a job that’s already moving. Transparent pricing can help contractors plan purchases more efficiently. On our shop page, you see the price, pick the thickness, and order โ no account setup, no minimum order size, whether you need one plate or a full ton.
Mistake 5: Forgetting Pickup Logistics
Contractors sometimes place an order without checking where it’s actually coming from. If your job site is in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, or San Diego County, plan your pickup window around will-call in Riverside. Order online, then swing by and load it โ no waiting around for a delivery truck that may not show up on your schedule. Check our home page for current service areas and hours.
Order Steel Plate the Easy Way
Every one of these mistakes comes down to the same thing: not having the exact spec, price, and pickup details in front of you before you order. Skip the back and forth. Get your steel plate Pickup timing depends on inventory, cutting requirements, order quantity, and order time.
FAQs
What steel plate grades does Pacific Coast Steel Supply offer?
We stock A36 and A572 Grade 50 steel plates, cut to the thickness and dimensions your project needs.
Can I order a custom-cut steel plate size?
Yes. Send us your plate dimensions and spec, and we cut it to that exact size instead of the closest rack size.
Is there a minimum order for steel plates?
No minimum order and no account setup required. You can order one plate or a full ton.
What is a Material Test Report (MTR)?
A Material Test Report (MTR) documents the material’s properties and helps verify that the steel meets the specified grade and applicable requirements. When a specific steel grade is required for a project, request and retain the MTR with your project records.
