A36 Steel Plate — Complete Buying Guide for Contractors & Fabricators

What is A36 steel plate?

A36 is a low-carbon, hot-rolled structural steel — the most common general-purpose steel grade in construction and fabrication. It’s valued for being easy to weld, cut, and drill, while still holding up under moderate structural loads. If a project spec just says “steel plate” without calling out a specialty alloy, it almost always means A36.

Common uses

  • Structural fabrication — brackets, gussets, weldments
  • Equipment and machinery base plates
  • Repair plate for trailers, trucks, and heavy equipment
  • Flooring, ramps, and work platforms
  • Wear plate in high-impact or high-traffic areas

Choosing a thickness

We stock six standard thicknesses: ¼”, 3/8″, ½”, 5/8″, ¾”, and 1″. As a general pattern (not an engineering rule):

  • ¼”–3/8″ suits panels, brackets, and fabrication that gets welded into a larger structure rather than carrying load on its own
  • ½”–5/8″ is a common middle ground for base plates and moderate-impact wear areas
  • ¾”–1″ goes toward heavier structural work, equipment bases, and high-impact zones

Always confirm thickness against your engineer’s spec for anything load-bearing — this guide is a starting point, not a substitute for structural calculations.

Bare finish

All our A36 plate ships bare and uncoated. That keeps cost down and leaves the surface ready for whatever coating, paint, or galvanizing your project calls for downstream — we don’t pre-finish plate, so you’re not paying for a coating you’ll strip or cover anyway.

Sizing and custom cutting

Every plate product page lets you enter your exact width and length in inches — the system calculates your total weight before you check out, so you see your real cost upfront. Standard mill sheet is 96″ × 240″ (8′ × 20′), and there’s no cutting fee on standard cuts to your specified dimensions.

Ordering

Pricing is by the pound and shown live as you enter dimensions — no quote request, no waiting on a callback. Select your thickness, enter width and length, and add to cart directly from the product page.

Southern California delivery and will-call

Full sheets ship in 1–2 business days. Delivery method is assigned automatically based on total plate weight — lighter pieces ship parcel (UPS/FedEx), mid-weight orders ship freight with liftgate delivery, and heavier orders ship freight with forklift-unload required. Will-call pickup is available from our yard for customers in the Riverside.
